UVA Health First Hospital in the State to Offer LiverMultiScan for Non-Invasive Assessment of Liver Disease

CHARLOTTESVILLE, 2 February 2021 – UVA Health is now offering patients a non-invasive liver imaging test, LiverMultiScan, to assess fatty liver disease.

Patients who are obese, as well as patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, are at greater risk for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a chronic liver condition characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver. Patients with NAFLD can potentially develop a more serious condition, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to scarring and liver failure. Patients with these conditions are at higher risk of earlier deaths caused either by liver damage or by heart disease associated with these liver conditions.  

“Fatty liver disease disproportionately affects patients with Diabetes so we're very pleased to partner with UVA and the Endocrinology Department to identify these patients and get them the care they need," said James Hounsell, General Manager at Perspectum.

LiverMultiScan is an MRI-based technology that provides key measurements of fat, iron and inflammation in the liver, which are warning signs of fatty liver disease. The technology was developed by Perspectum, creators of advanced imaging for patients with metabolic disease.

“At UVA Health, we will use LiverMultiScan to check patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes for early signs of liver disease and provide care appropriately,” said Rita Basu, MD, a UVA Health Endocrinologist.

“There is a large population of patients with undiagnosed fatty liver disease,” said Rachita Knot, MD, a UVA Health Radiologist. “We will use LiverMultiScan in groups of patients at higher risk for these serious conditions to look for early changes in the liver.”
